- EXTRACT
Buckley Jones slammed the flimsy back door behind him for the fifth time this week. Remarkably, despite its precarious hold on the hinges, the door remained intact. Known to the townsfolk simply as Buck, he was a figure more often avoided than approached, his temperamental nature and penchant for trouble leaving many wary of crossing his path.
The source of today’s argument with his wife was a famil¬iar one—Buck’s relentless drinking, which had now devoured the last remnants of their government assistance check. With a cigarette dangling between his fingers, Buck sought respite in the haze of smoke, eager to distance himself from the incessant nagging of his wife. This brief escape into the nicotine cloud of¬fered a momentary reprieve from the escalating strife that had, yet again, engulfed his home.
Mumbling to himself about the perpetual misfortunes of his life, Buck lamented how everything, including life itself, had always been crap to him. He railed against his wife, brand¬ing her a ‘miserable old sod’ under his breath. In his embittered monologue, Buck’s words were laced with venom and defeat, a reflection of a life marred by regret and misplaced anger.
He settled into the worn chair on his porch, the cigarette smoke curling lazily around him. As he brooded over his mis¬fortunes, a twig snapped in the forest behind his home, shat¬tering the eerie silence of the night. Buck’s head snapped up, his senses on high alert.
With his false bravado, he called out, “Who’s there?” His voice wavered slightly, betraying the underlying fear that churned within him. When no reply came, he rose from his seat, the adrenaline coursing through his veins.
“Show yourselves!” he bellowed, his voice echoing into the darkness. “I’m armed, and I ain’t afraid to use it!” But the forest remained silent, its secrets cloaked in shadow.
After a tense moment, Buck hesitated, his bravado waning in the face of the unknown. With a nervous glance over his shoulder, he retreated back to his chair, the sense of foreboding lingering in the air around him.
Buck’s mumbling ceased abruptly when he noticed the eerie quiet around him. This silence, profound and unsettling, lacked the usual cacophony of insects—a stark absence that made it seem as if nature itself had recoiled in anticipation of what was to come.
Deep in the pit of his stomach, Buck knew something wasn’t right and suddenly felt immense dread. He had neglected to switch on the porch light upon stepping out, relying instead on the moonlight that typically bathed his backyard.
Then, from right behind him came a growl so deep and menacing it seemed to echo from the depths of a nightmare. The sound, imbued with an evil intent, was enough to still Buck’s heart. He could feel the hot breath of whatever was growling. Paralyzed with fear, he could not muster the courage to turn and face the source of the sound.
A sense of unease gnawed at Buck’s insides, an intuitive warning that something was terribly wrong, blossoming into a suffocating dread. Overwhelmed by terror, Buck felt a warm liquid spreading over his jeans.
In that moment of utter fear, Buck—a man defined by a life of hardship and anger—found himself whispering prayers into the encroaching darkness, desperately seeking salvation from the looming threat.
Yet, no divine intervention came to Buck’s aid. The Sasquatch, fueled by primal rage, executed a swift and brutal judgment. With terrifying ease, the creature placed each of its hands on the sides of Buck’s head. In one swift, brutal motion, it tore his head clean off and hurled it against the side of the house—a gruesome testament to the creature’s immense strength.
This act of savagery marked the end of Buck’s turbulent journey, a life extinguished as suddenly as it had been lived.
Meanwhile, inside their home, Vera’s startled voice pierced the chaos. “What was that racket, Buck?” she called out, unaware of the horror unfolding just beyond their door.
Hearing Vera’s voice, the enraged Sasquatch redirected its malevolent fury towards the house. It crashed through the back door with unbridled force, shattering the once-peaceful night with a cacophony of destruction and terror. Thus began a nightmare that would soon engulf the entire town, its residents caught in a relentless tide of violence and fear.
